Sazaedo is known as a unique building with a double helix slope. Byakkotai in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, is also built on the hillside of Mt. Iimori, where the graveyard is located. The common name is “Aizu Sazaedo” or simply “Sazaedo”, and the official name is “Entsu Sansodo” (important cultural property designated name is “Former Shosoji Sankodo”).
It is a peculiar building with a flat hexagon. Although it can be said that it has a three-layer structure, there are double-helical slopes inside, and there are separate slopes that go up clockwise and those that go down counterclockwise. You can go up the slope from the entrance to the top floor, get off another slope and exit from the exit without passing by other companies.
The Buddhist temple of Shosou-ji, which used to be in this area, was built by Ikudo, who was the chief priest at that time, in the 8th year of Kansei (1796) in the latter half of the Edo period. At that time, Amida Nyorai was the principal image, and it is said that 33 Kannon statues were enshrined on the slope. Sazaedo, which had a form of worship of mixed gods and Buddha, was abandoned due to the abolition of Buddha in the Meiji era, and since then, Sazaedo has been owned by an individual. In addition, the 33 Kannon statues in the hall have been moved to another place, and the forehead of “Twenty-four Takashi of the Empire” is attached instead. The plane is a hexagon with a side of 3.4 m, and six through pillars are erected in the center of the hall. The side pillars (pillars built on the outer circumference of the building) are also six through pillars, and a connecting beam is passed between them and the central pillar. The roof will be copper-roofed, and the front entrance will be equipped with a gabled gable. The ceiling at the top will be a folded mirror ceiling.
There are other temples with the same name, but no other temple has a unique internal structure like the former Sazaedo Temple, and as a rare example, it was dated June 27, 1995. It was designated as a national important cultural property. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)
